The Elida PK-5 Elementary School was a 130,211sq ft school that started in March of 2020 and finished for Regal in August 2021. It is a two-story pre-kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school. The gymnasium was to serve as a storm shelter that would house the entire school. The design included projectile resistance louvers as well as large storm shelter metal shrouds that were fabricated and installed on the inside of the gymnasium (weighing 2,500 lbs/piece). The shrouds were installed at approximately 25′ above the finished floor and mounted to the 16” thick masonry slush-filled walls with #2 rebar in each cell.
This impressive shelter also required that any wall or roof penetrations over 3 inches have opening protection. The natural ventilation system had to be capable of operating independent of the gymnasium’s normal HVAC system. All fail safe controls and manual overrides were designed to operate with or without power allowing them to support normal gymnasium operation as well as tornado shelter operation. The domestic water supply was constructed to supply water to shelter occupants and shelter restrooms independent of the remainder of the building.
